The Importance of Early Introduction to Science and Innovation for a Brighter Future _ personal experience

Last week, my 8-year-old came home from school with a handwritten note about a book he would like called Bright New World by Cindy Forde. He said, "Mom, I really would like this book. I read it in the school library and it's so cool. It's all the things you love too, and all the things you work with and talk about." That moment confirmed my belief in the importance of early introduction to science, innovation, and natural sciences in creating a sense of hope and optimism for a brighter future in children.

Spending hours with a toddlers at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, reading books about nature, planting seeds, talking about the cycles of life, neurons, electricity, magnetism, the science of matter and stardust, and discussing concepts of time and space—never being too early, and always in a child-friendly way—has always been a cornerstone of our approach to parenting. These activities not only educate but also inspire a sense of wonder and possibility.

Today, too many children suffer from anxiety and depression, often caused by climate anxiety, social media pressures, poor diets, and exposure to conflicts and wars. However, introducing children to science and innovation can counteract these negative influences by fostering a mindset of curiosity and problem-solving. Understanding the world and how we can improve it provides children with a sense of control and purpose.

In my family, science and innovation, coupled with spirituality, have always been interconnected. Despite our challenging past and present experiences of ethnic persecution and exile, our faith in the power of humans to drive positive change and create a better tomorrow has never wavered. From the inspiring journeys of Star Trek to the groundbreaking work of Albert Einstein and Lise Meitner, we believe that science combined with humanism is a powerful source of hope and a brighter future.

Bright New World by Cindy Forde is a testament to this belief. The book explores how a sustainable and prosperous future can be achieved through innovation and creativity. It resonates with the values I strive to impart to my children: that the world is full of challenges, but humans are inherently equipped to find solutions and drive positive change. It’s a reminder that hope is a catalyst for positive transformation.

By nurturing a love for science and innovation in children, we are not just educating them; we are empowering them to envision and create a better world. Let's encourage our children to explore, question, and innovate, instilling in them the optimism and resilience needed to face the future with confidence and hope.
